The Nope Trope Book Tag

I don’t want to think about how much time I’ve spent down the TV Tropes rabbit hole but it’s enough time to know what tropes I hate. So, I liked the look of this tag I found on Divine World of Books and, yep, all the tropes mentioned in the main body of the tag (but not the books) are ones I hate.

Original Creator: Zoe’s All Booked

Eavesdropping w/ miscommunication – Name a book you heard great things about and expected to love but ended up hating.

the binding

I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Binding and I thought the audiobook’s narration was great. The pacing, however, not so much. I just got so sick of tantalising hints of what might happen and nothing actually happening. I wouldn’t say I hated it, though. I do think I’ll got back to this and try again someday.

Love Triangles – Name a series where you can’t pick your favourite book.

These books are incredibly binge-able. Each are action packed with lots of great character moments and unexpected plot twists. I just can’t pick my favourite!

Not Like Other Girls/Didn’t Know I’m Beautiful – Name a book that has a pretty cover but was boring as all hell.

crown of feathres

This book burnt itself out pretty quickly for me when I ran into a ton of info dumps. I could barely get to the 25% mark before DNFing.

All-Consuming Love – Name a book that gave you a book hangover.

How could it have ended on that cliffhanger?! I really hope the third book comes out soon because it’s still driving me mad!

Douchebag Boyfriend – Name a book that took you a while to get into, but you ended up loving.

sorcery of thorns

Sorcery of Thorns had a bit of a slow middle but, thankfully, it got going again and the last third was excellent.

Tell us your favourite or least favourite trope!

fury of the timelord

My favourite trope is probably Good is Not Soft. I love a bit of moral grey in my heroes and I love the creative ways they can get around any no-killing rules. If you’re not familiar with where the above gif is from, it’s from a great (and very famous) example of this in Doctor Who. Just look up ‘The Fury of the Time Lord’ on Youtube and you’ll see why.

elmo idiot

My least favourite trope is probably Idiot Ball. Characters are supposed to make mistakes, yes, but they are supposed to be in-character mistakes and they’re supposed to be important character-developing moments. They’re not supposed to be temporary stupidity inflicted by the author for the sake of moving the plot forward!

I tag anyone who wants to talk about the tropes they hate!

I hope to see you again very soon.
