Blogmas 2021 Day 25: The Christmas Stocking Book Tag

Happy Christmas! I hope you found everything you were hoping to find in your stocking and are happily immersed in all the books you received. Here’s another stocking-full of books for your Christmas pleasure in case you run out, which I found on the original creator’s website (linked below).

You get up on Christmas morning and your stocking is full! You take it down and start to unwrap the treats inside. The first thing you see is…

An orange! Which book is refreshing and vibrant, both inside and out?

tea dragon tapestry

Vibrant is definitely the word for this series. It’s refreshingly sweet and full of fascinating magic.

The next thing you see is a bag of chocolate coins. (Yum) Which book have you recently bought that was a little expensive, but totally worth the price?

9780552177306

Okay, it isn’t that much more expensive than the usual version but it was an indulgence for me this year so the 25th anniversary edition of Hogfather counts. I might have time to re-read this book this year too so it’s a good way to celebrate.

You also pull out a bath bomb. Tell us about a book that had explosive action scenes.

rule of wolves

The Grishaverse definitely knows how to do an explosive finale and an unexpected twist at the ending!

Next is a pack of playing cards. Which series won you over?

an illusion of thieves

I’d heard a few bad reviews of this book so I didn’t go into it with high hopes. Boy, did I not expect how much this won me over!

You also get a candle. Which character is a symbol of hope in their story?

comfort book

This whole book is a symbol of hope, really, and a good one to reach for when hope is running low.

There are socks inside too. Is there a book that you think really encompasses all the distinctive tropes of its genre?

sabriel audiobook

A well-realised world, a snarky animal companion, a great magic system, an evil overlord and a hidden heir to the throne. This book and series has it all!

There’s also a notebook. Which author’s writing process do you find most interesting/inspiring?

the diviners

I love how well researched the Diviners books are and how well they weave together the supernatural with the roaring twenties.

To go with the notebook, there’s a fancy pen. Is there a book or a series that you’d change if you’d written it yourself?

keeper of the lost cities

I’d definitely rip out about a third of it and make Sophie actually work for her victories rather than have all her abilities handed to her. I’d also give this book a proper plot.

There’s also a small bedside clock. Which book took you a long time to pick up but was worth it in the end?

deeplight 1

This sat in my TBR file for an embarrasingly long time. I think this was a Christmas 2019 present and I didn’t get around to reading it until this summer. It was well worth the wait, though!

Your pile is getting really big. You reach in to pull out the last gift and it’s… a lump of coal? You’re a little disappointed. But you look closer and realise there’s a seam running through the coal. You crack it open and sitting inside is a tiny golden gem. Tell us about a book that surprised you in some way.

rumaysa

I’ve read a fair few fairytale retellings and this one is easily one of the most original I’ve ever read. I love this story’s take on the fairy godmother and love this ending of the Cinderella story. Girls helping other girls are a real dealmaker too!

I tag anyone who wants another stocking full of books!

I hope to see you again very soon.
